IDEAS
Your support of this week is critical to its success, and we need your help to ensure the National LGBT Health Awareness Week is as successful as possible. There are many ways for you and your organization to contribute to the national campaign and get involved on the local level.
This is just a sampling of ideas from our membership. If you have any more ideas or are planning to do something, please let us know by submitting your ideas and plans to coalition@lgbthealth.net
- Write a Letter to the Editor or Op-Ed about the importance of LGBT health issues
- Call your member of Congress about the importance of LGBT health issues
- Host health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, STDs, HIV, etc.
- Offer tours of your health facilities for the media, policy makers, specific target populations, e.g., youth, transgender.
- Partner with local medical and behavioral health providers for their participation by presenting a workshop, offering incentive rates/services for the week, attending a cultural competency training
- Offer several two-hour workshops throughout the week on topics such as Stress Reduction (yoga, meditation, etc.), Smoking Cessation, Heart Healthy Foods, Creative Movement, Emotional Wellness and/or Enhancing Interpersonal Relationships
- Present a 2- or 3-hour "town meeting" at which medical providers, public health experts, health activists would host open discussion about the real health concerns related to club drugs and the "club drug culture."
- Hold a "Fun Run" or "Pride Stride" at a local venue.
- Work with State and City governments to officially declare an LGBT Health Care Week. Use one of these: Sample Resolution or Sample Proclamation
Please share your ideas on what will make this week a successful one. Let's us know what you are planning so that we can promote your activities via our newly designed Awareness Week website and provide you assistance where possible. You can submit your plans or ideas by emailing our National Field Director, Donald Hitchcock, at coalition@lgbthealth.net. Your input is valued and important in the work that we do.
